Four-, Five, and Six-year MD students who begin their studies at Northumbria University will complete one year of integrated basic sciences at our technologically advanced campus in Grenada.

5-Year MD Program
A five-year academic program leading to a Doctor of Medicine (MD).
The five-year MD program is designed for students with Advanced Level or International Baccalaureate credentials. Students build on an academic background in science with challenging medical education coursework in anatomy, physiology, and other foundational sciences necessary for success in the basic sciences and clinical sciences phases of the MD degree program in SGU’s medical school.

Program Overview
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at St. George’s University opens doors for a medical career on an international scale, having been accredited and/or approved by many external regulatory and accrediting bodies. Among these are: the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), the Government of Grenada, the New York State Education Department, the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners, the Medical Board of California, Florida Commission on Independent Education.
The accreditation standards that have been used to accredit St. George’s University’s medical degree program have been deemed comparable to those used by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the organization that accredits US and Canadian medical schools.
In the first two to five years of the program (depending upon a student’s entry qualifications), students receive instruction in preclinical sciences on the beautiful True Blue campus in Grenada. Students can also choose to spend up to two years of their preclinical sciences study in the UK, with SGU's partner Northumbria University, who offers SGU's program in Newcastle. During the final two years, students complete the clinical experience in SGU’s wide array of clinical hospital affiliates in the US, UK, and Canada.

Entry Qualifications for 5 Year MD
3 Advanced Levels: A’s and B’s in Chemistry, Biology, and either Math or Physics
CAPE Units 1 and 2: Minimum grade of 2 in Biology, Chemistry, and either Physics or Maths. If applicant has a 1 at CAPE 1 level in either Physics or Maths, then another subject can be considered.
Full IB Diploma with strong grades. 3HL science courses recommended; 2HL required.
Associate degree: (60 credits or equivalent) with biology, chemistries, and mathematics.
India 10 + 2 with 80%—reviewed for Five-Year MD

COVID-19 Update: Entry Requirements
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, IELTS centers have suspended testing in many of the countries, and it is anticipated that when centers do re-open, there will be a very large backlog of tests to clear. To enable our international applicants who are planning to join the St. George’s University School of Medicine in August 2020 to meet our admissions documents’ requirements, we will be temporarily accepting English test results by a number of other providers, including TOEFL, CEA, and Pearson.
This change will ensure that students, who are required to provide English Language proficiency scores, will have greater access to English Language Test slots.
The approved English Language Test Providers for August 2020 class are as follows:

  • IELTS – No changes to the current scoring*;
  • TOEFL – No changes to the current scoring*;
  • PassWord-Skills – Scoring is the same as IELTS scoring for direct entry;
  • C1 Advanced (CEA) – A score of 186 overall is required for direct entry;
  • PTE- Academic (Pearson) – A score of 85 overall is required for direct entry.

Please note that these changes do not apply to students planning to start their studies with our partner Northumbria University in the UK.

Four-Year MD Curriculum Overview
The Four-Year MD program consists of a 157-week curriculum that is typically completed within four calendar years. 
The MD program is broken down into two phases: Basic Sciences, and Clinical Training. 

  • Year 1 and Year 2 (Basic Sciences), students complete their courses on the True Blue Campus in Grenada. Students learn through traditional lectures and laboratory sessions augmented by small–group sessions and case–based learning exercises. 
  • Year 3 and Year 4 (Clinical Training) happens at SGU affiliated hospitals and clinics across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Grenada using bedside teaching and augmented by lectures, small groups, and directed study. 

The curriculum for our Four-Year program gives you the foundation needed to succeed as a physician, and prepares you to grow your practice into a thriving career in medicine.

The seven–year Doctor of Medicine program is designed for students who have secondary school credentials who need to study a complete course in the foundation sciences necessary to be successful in the medical degree program. With a focus on preclinical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the seven–year entry point offers this necessary foundation. 
Dual BS/MD Degree Option
By entering SGU’s seven-year preclinical program, you may be eligible to earn a Bachelor of Science on your way to completing your Doctor of Medicine. The BS/MD option allow you to complete your undergraduate degree in three years of undergraduate and preclinical courses.

Curriculum and Format
The first two years of the four-year MD program concentrate on the traditional basic science disciplines on the True Blue campus in Grenada. Students can also choose to spend their first year of the program studying in the UK with SGU's partner Northumbria University. Laboratory experience is an integral part of these first two years, along with small group discussions designed for problem-based learning and early integration of the clinical medicine into basic sciences.
The final two years focus on clinical sciences, with training at SGU’s 70+ clinical centers and affiliated hospitals in the United States and United Kingdom. Our approach to clinical training gives students an opportunity to learn medicine in some of the best and best-known hospitals in the world with core rotations, sub-internships, primary care, and elective rotations.
Clinical training emphasizes responsibility, maturity, and compassion in the development of professional excellence. Students learn how to conduct themselves as physicians, take responsibility, work harmoniously with professional colleagues, and exhibit maturity.
